When quite a few people think of hypnosis, images of moving pocket watches might be the first thing they think of, together with the words ‘you are feeling sleepy… very tired’. Or maybe they remember seeing stage hypnosis exhibitions where people in the audience are made to act stupidly. However, hypnosis is far from being a frivolous party trick or mumbo jumbo; it offers the very real opportunity to change lives by re-educating the brain into letting go of harmful habits such as cigarette smoking or consuming too much, and can help free people from crippling anxiety or depression. Yet it is of course normal to wonder ‘hypnotherapy – does it work?’ if you’re thinking of utilising this therapeutic method. Therefore it is important to take time to find out about the real positive effects this form of treatment can supply.

How exactly does it work?

The hypnotherapist will help the person change deep-rooted beliefs, attitudes and practices by being able to access the subconscious mind and ‘planting’ completely new creative ideas. Whereas the conscious mind only remembers a fraction of everything we see, hear and encounter; the subconscious mind retains anything and everything, in many cases without our awareness. By handling these subconscious beliefs and habits, the hypnotherapist can help the person develop more favourable and healthy thought processes.

A popular myth is the fact that hypnotherapists make people fall asleep. Rather, the individual is eased into a state of intense relaxation.

If truth be told, the majority of people don’t become aware they have been in this state until the hypnotherapist brings them back to an everyday level of awareness. A lot of people experience no conscious change in their state of mind, because within a hypnosis session the customer remains conscious of everything that is taking place around them. However, individuals are typically surprised by the amount of time that has gone by in their session, as an individual’s experience of time gets altered whilst within a hypnotic state of relaxation.

Real overall results

So many clients have experienced constructive life changes by utilising a hypnotic approach, for problems including smoking cigarettes, weight issues, anxiety, depression, sleeping disorders and addiction. Also many highly successful people have benefited from hypnosis, including Matt Damon (to help him quit smoking cigarettes), Orlando Bloom (to beat a dependency to chocolate), Kevin Costner (to remove sea sickness when shooting ‘Waterworld’) and Sophie Dahl (for weight reduction).

Despite the fact that hypnosis profession has only achieved widespread notice fairly recently, it is believe it or not a respected profession – in the 1890’s, the British Medical Association commissioned an investigation which acknowledged that “as a therapeutic agent hypnotism is frequently effective in relieving pain, procuring sleep, and alleviating many functional ailments [i.e. psycho-somatic complaints and anxiety disorders].” Even Einstein used a hypnotic approach!

So with over 100 years of constructive regard, plus the backing of countless individuals and celebrities, a hypnotic approach can provide a tried-and-tested, positive resolution for a wide collection of challenges.
